Sophia Jaramillo

A review of Sophia Jaramillo’s life seems to indicate that she is a “natural-born president.”

The organizations she has served in that capacity include the New Mexico Association of Retired Educators (for six years), the Santa Fe chapter of the American Association of Retired People, the local American Business Women unit (four times), City Different Retired Educators, Santa Fe Dance Club, etc.

But all that executive experience came in her spare time. In her extremely full life Sophia has been a wife, raised a family, held important positions at New Mexico Highlands University and in state government, become an authority in education retirement, taught at the state penitentiary, and served non-stop as a volunteer.

Where to begin, where to end, as a volunteer? Cub Scouts, Villa Theresa Clinic, St. Francis Altar Society, St. Francis Academy, the Delta Kappa Gamma honorary educational sorority, Seniors Reaching Out—which sends elders out to act their life roles before young people at schools and libraries. In addition, she helps take care of two granddaughters, and is determined to paint more and finish her book Cristina, a story about traditions in Northern New Mexico. And dance more.
