At the University of Pennsylvania Murray got scholarships and washed dishes at frat houses to put himself through undergraduate and medical school. "I didn't do much else, except study and wash dishes."
Murray became interested in radiology, he said, because it "represented as near an exact science as I could reach in medicine." He picked the best place to become a resident, Columbia University, but when he arrived, no residencies were available. Nevertheless, he asked to be allowed to simply observe, which he did for six months, until he was offered a residency.
